"The United Kingdom has long been famous for its collections of Dutch pictures, both public and private, and the total in the country must still be about the same as those which remain the property of the Dutch themselves. The Royal Collections, The National Gallery, the Wallace Collection and many others contain many of the most important surviving pictures by Cuyp, Hobbema and Jan Steen to mention only three masters who are particularly well represented in British Collections.
"It may come as a surprise, therefore, that at the present time there are no less than forty-seven pictures by , or attributed to, Jan van Goyen in the Public Museums and National Trust Houses of this country (...)"
