Preface, Godwin Blake-More (The Toledo Museum of Art) - Introduction, Theodore Rousseau, Jr. - Biographical Notes - Suggested Reading - Reproductions in Half Tone.

Ce catalogue a été édité à l'occasion de l'exposition présentée au Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York, au Toledo Museum of Art et à Toronto, The Art Gallery, en 1954 et 1955.
Theodore Rousseau, Jr. , conservateur au département des Peintures du Metropolitan Museum of Art, a préfacé le catalogue : "The dutch school was admired above all others in the United States at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. It has since be said that this popularity has waned not only with the public and the collectors but also among the artists, who no longer look to it for direction and inspiration. This indifference, if it exists, must be for the moment only, because no lover of art, no painter, who studies this school with its extraordinary range covering all the possibilities of painting from the "abstraction" of Vermeer to the passionate "expression" of Rembrandt, can fail to find in it instruction and beauty."
