Ce catalogue a été édité à l'occasion de l'exposition The Spanish Portrait from El Greco to Picasso présentée au musée du Prado, Madrid, du 20 octobre 2004 au 6 février 2006.
Cette exposition présentait un vaste panorama de l'histoire du portrait dans la peinture espagnole du 15e au 20e siècle : 87 œuvres majeures avaient été sélectionnées, parmi lesquelles des portraits de Greco, Ribera, Murillo, Velázquez, Zurbarán, Goya, Miró et Picasso.
