Ce catalogue a été édité à l'occasion de l'exposition Turner : The Final Years Watercolours 1840-1851 présentée à la Tate Gallery, Londres, du 10 février au 17 mai 1993.
The final years from 1840 to his death in 1851 saw Turner produce some of the most remarkable and innovative works of his long career.
Sunset skies, storms and the captivating play of light on water are recurrent subjects in these pictures, treated in a manner totally unlike anything yet produced in Britain at that time.
Visiting Venice in 1840, Turner was inspired to make a long series of sumptuous watercolours. In Switzerland, which he visited several times in the 1840s, Turner tried to capture more ethereal effects of light and atmosphere, as well as the expansive drama of the Alpine landscape.
