"This book, says Roy Strong, is an account of Elizabethan and Jacobean easel painting covering the period c 1540 to c 1620. It concerns mostly with the pictures themselves and attempts, for the first time, to group and catalogue them.
"I have also tried, in the Introduction, to exoke the historical background, the climate of thought and stylistic development affecting pictorial activity during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I."
The Reigns of Elizabeth I and James I mark what , without doubt, one of England's most renowned periods of creative activity. It was the age of Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, of Marlowe and Spenser, Sidney, Donne and Herrick. In Tallis, Weelks and Byrd, English music found its first major composers. But apart, perphaps, from the miniaturists Nicholas Hilliard and Isaac Oliver, the painters of the period have long remained largely unknown, their work regarded by most as insular and inexpert.
