A painter of acknowledged genius, he was a gifted amateur musician, intimate with all the leading composers and instrumentalists of the day, a letter-writter whose spontaneous and idiosyncrasic style was compared to that of Sterne, an equally skittish and brilliant conversationalist -and, though essentially modest and unpretentious, clearly something of a character, an original in everything he said or did."
