Although eighteenth-century England produced an unusually large and diverse group of competent draughtsmen, none was more accomplished or prolific than Thomas Rowlandson.
His exhuberant and flowing contours owe much to French, and particularly Rococo, art, but his handling of tone, with its carefully muted effects, and his accumulation of detail belong to an English tradition that begins at the time of Hogarth.
