George Stubbs was khown in his lifetime as "Mr Stubbs the Horse Painter", a label which has clung to him ever since.
Not only did Stubbs paint superb equine portraits, he was also an illustrator, engraver and outstanding chronicler of nature, wheter human, equestrian, canine or in the wild.
His belief that "Nature is superior to Art" formed the basis of his artistic creed throughout his life. This understanding of anatomy enabled Stubbs to bring new standards to horse painting and was the catalyst which unlocked the door to his wide-ranging talents.
