Ce catalogue a été édité à l'occasion de l'exposition Poussin The Early Years in Rome présentée au Kimbell Art Museum en 1988.
Cette étude monographique avait pour objet les sept années -de 1622 à 1629- qui marquèrent le premier développement artistique de Poussin et jouèrent un rôle déterminant dans l'avènement du classicisme. Pour la première fois, était présentée une part essentielle des peintures et dessins exécutés par Poussin durant cette période d'une grande complexité.
"Poussin's austere yet profoundly moving art was the fruit of years of intense study of literature, philosophy, and art of the ancient world, as well as a complete absorption of the achievements of Italian art of the Renaissance and later. He took as his subject matter the heroic and tragic tales of ancient myth and biblical history, creating profound meditations on human conflict and mortality ; few artists have equaled him in the depth and poetry with which he probed the archetypal stories that form the classical heritage of Western man."
Spécialiste reconnu des dessins de Raphaël, Konrad Oberhuber (Linz, 1935 - San Diego, 2007) dirigea l'Albertina, à Vienne, de 1987 à 2000.
