Dutch Society in the Age of Vermeer is written by nine authors, most of them historians or art historians. It provides background information about socio-economic aspects of the province of Holland in the seventeenth century. The life of the painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) runs like a silver thread through the book. Sometimes this takes the form of a precise description of the circumstances in which the Vermeer family lived ; sometimes we are given a detailed report of what Vermeer's Delft looked like, or we may be told some of the current ideas about this painter. The writters consider Vermeer's social background, his training, the rules of the guild of painters which he joined, the art market as it existed in his day, the prices of his paintings and the income of an artist. Vermeer lived and worked in Delft and we are given a detailed picture of this dutch city in the Golden Age.
