"The years spent by Anthony Van Dyck in London, in the service of Charles I, are the most dramatic in the history of English Painting. When he arrived in London in the early spring of 1632, he was one of the most succesful and accomplished painters in Europe. (...) Charles I had wanted for many years to attract to his service a painter of international reputation and he found in Van Dyck a painter who shared many of his own taste and especially his love of Titian. Outwardly at least there has never been a more civilized court in this country than the one presided over by Charles I and his Queen ; and Van Dyck's portraits are the most refined, evocative and influential works of art created in that glamorous setting."
